Psychiatrist & Psychoanalyst
English Psychiatric Care with
a Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst
Dr. Jahng is a specialist in psychiatry and an International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) psychoanalyst.
She has completed both an advanced in-depth psychotherapy training program and psychoanalytic training with the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). Building on this systematic training, she offers in-depth psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.
Her interest in the human mind led her to pursue a deeper understanding of it. This began with specialist training in psychiatry and gradually developed into the study of psychoanalysis to understand the unconscious more deeply.
Through this work, she came to better understand the realities and inner landscapes of patients’ minds that a list of symptoms alone could not reveal. Witnessing changes in patients’ lives through this approach inspired her to continue studying and undertake psychoanalytic training.
In her practice today, she continues to place importance on both the medical assessment of current symptoms and an understanding of the emotional context in which those symptoms arise.

Emotional Language
Understanding Emotional
Language in English
Psychiatric Care
Having lived in an English-speaking country during childhood, Dr. Jahng offers consultations to people who wish to receive care in English. Apart from the language used, the approach to care is the same.
The language we use to describe our inner lives does more than communicate symptoms. Speaking in our native language can allow richer emotional expression, and the memories we can access through that language may differ. For people who feel more comfortable expressing themselves in English, being able to speak in English is an important part of care.
Dr. Jahng aims to listen carefully to patients’ feelings and experiences through psychoanalytic sensitivity and an understanding of emotional language.
Treatment
Considering Medication and Psychoanalysis
in English Psychiatric Care
Care begins with assessing your current symptoms and the difficulties causing you the greatest distress. Dr. Jahng aims to prescribe medication with empathy and a sufficient understanding of your emotional difficulties, rather than treating it simply as a prescription for a symptom.
When psychological difficulties play an important role, a psychoanalytic approach may be considered alongside an assessment of whether medication is needed. When symptoms are severe, medication may need to take priority.
The available treatments and their benefits and limitations are explained. The direction of care is discussed with you, taking account of your current condition, treatment goals and preferences.

Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic
Psychotherapy in English
Psychoanalysis is a treatment that seeks to understand and work through emotional difficulties that repeat in the present and continue to influence the future.
Similar feelings and conflicts may recur even when the people and circumstances change. You may understand a pattern intellectually yet find it difficult to respond differently. Psychoanalysis explores these repetitions, including feelings and ways of responding that you may not yet fully recognize.
Patient and analyst participate together in an ongoing dialogue. It is not a process in which the analyst provides answers for the patient to receive passively.
Treatment
Typical Frequency
Focus
Psychoanalysis
Generally four sessions a week
Sustained, in-depth exploration of recurring emotional and relational patterns and unconscious conflicts
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy
Generally one to three sessions a week
Understanding current symptoms and relationship difficulties from a psychoanalytic perspective
The approach and frequency are discussed in light of your current difficulties, the changes you hope for and your practical circumstances. This work requires time and consistent participation; the same approach is not recommended for everyone.
